"Bridging Abstraction and Realism"

March 4-5-6, 2026 ONLINE workshop

Delaware Watercolor Society

Non-members are welcome!

Alexis believes that an abstract design is the foundation of every painting, essential for its success. So - every one of her paintings, even if it looks realistic, is also abstract!

And then every so often, she creates a painting that is entirely abstract, with no identifiable imagery in it. This process is different from her realistic process, but as with realism, requires a strong foundation of design, along with intuitive decision making. Two very different ways of working, with two very different results!

In this workshop, Alexis will create two demo paintings for you, one realistic, and one abstract. She will use the same source photo for both. It will be fascinating to see how she uses lines, shapes, values, colors, and textures from one photo ... to create two very different paintings.

"Free Yourself from Copying

April 22-23-24, ONLINE workshop

$275.00 tuition

Alexis has thousands of photos, which she interprets to inspire her watercolor paintings.  She is a professional watercolor painter, but not a professional photographer.  In fact, she takes particular delight in working with photos that are out of focus, poorly composed, cluttered, or over or under exposed.  Why?  Because that forces her to interpret what she sees, to use her imagination, and to design and create paintings that are original, personal, and way better than the photos that inspired them!

During this workshop, Alexis will share many different ways in which she interprets her photos, designs her paintings, imagines and conceives her pictorial stories, plans and draws her shapes, selects colors and values, and lots more!  Her demos will surprise, inspire, and encourage you.         This workshop will be great for all painters who want to avoid the trap of copying their photos, and who want to break out and use their photos in new and creative ways.  So - grab your camera and start shooting.  Dig those shoe boxes of old photos out of your closet.  And spend an insightful and eye-opening workshop, learning how to interpret your photos and make great paintings!
